My Doctoral Research

All along, I always thought it was just me. I thought I was the only one feeling the need to perform and overcompensate for the negative images and assumptions held of Black men and Black fathers. I carried the weight of the stereotypical “absent Black father” with me every day; and still do. I thought it was only me that felt the need to show “them” that Black dads are involved and can be present in the schools, just like moms. To my surprise, it was and is not just me that carried that weight. In my initial conversations and empathy interviews with other Black fathers when beginning my doctoral journey, I learned that this feeling was real.

My Dissertation of Practice centers anti-racist principles by considering the experiences, perspectives, and asset-based strategies that Black fathers utilize in developing and sustaining strong family-school partnerships.

From my own experiences as a Black father, I know there is an opportunity to explore the connection that Black fathers have with one another and with the school system. Stay tuned for updates to my research!
